First Day of Class

Who I am?

I am Samantha Nelson. This is my first semester at FSU; last semester I was at Tallahassee Community College. I am majoring in Elementary Education and eventually want to become a principal. I have been playing volleyball ever since my freshman year of high school! I am involved in kNOw more on campus and as well the Dance Project. I would love to get involved in a sorority this semester and can't wait to see where FSU takes me!

What Type of Technology?

My first major interaction with technology started in my 3rd grade computer class. We learned how to use Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel, and many other different types of platforms to display information. In high school, I worked for a Social Media Marketing company because I originally wanted to major in communications and advertising. Every day at my job I was learning how to create ads for companies on platforms like Facebook and Snapchat. Also in high school, I used Google Docs twenty- four seven because many of my teachers would use Turnitin, which is a website where the teachers can check for plagiarism.

What do I hope for?

In this class I hope to learn different learning styles that can benefit my future being in a classroom. I hope to learn about new platforms and many different perspectives on what is good and bad to use in a classroom. I also am excited to have hands on learning with the many new types of technology.

  1. Hey! I think it is so cool that you were taught how to use various parts of the Microsoft Office resources so early on. I remember being taught how to type, but I don't believe I was ever offered a class like that until college.

    1. I went to a private elementary school and they really focused on music, foreign languages, and technology; so like every other day we would be in a computer lab typing away and going through quizzes of Microsoft Office. Looking back it makes me realize how kids learn at such a young age everything about technology.

  2. Well I guess I should start off by saying welcome to FSU! I've actually been debating taking classes at TCC over the summer. My first interaction with technology was also in elementary school when we had to learn how to type without looking and using all fingers. I can't believe you worked for a social media company in high school! That's amazing! Another thing we have in common is how we learned how to be leaders and deal with conflict. During my senior year, I was promoted at my job and had to learn how to deal and address problems while maintaining a sense of professionalism. I think these are skills we can both carry into our classroom careers.

ISTE Computational Thinker Resource

The standard that I chose helps children develop their problem solving skills with using technology methods; so I decided to find a website that had many different math games because this deals with algorithmic thinking. When I was in elementary and middle school I loved when we would go to the computer lab and get to choose what games we play because it gave me freedom to have fun while learning. I feel like finding a website that has a lot to choose from makes this process of Computational Thinking fun for the kids who don't like problem- solving or Math in general. Also this website offers Preschool to 5th grade, so as the students advances the games do as well! I have attached the link below to the website I found that has many different games that your students can play! Math Games
