The ELA technology standard that I feel most prepared to teach in a classroom would be LAFS.2.SL.2.5, which states “recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media. This standard is focused for 2nd Grade, which is the grade I want to end up teaching when I graduate. This semester I am observing a classroom of fourth graders and I have noticed how much children read in the classroom setting, so I feel like using this standard to address what the key ideas are in a story will be very easy using technology. One ELA technology standard that would require me to have more research on my part would be LAFS.3.SL.2.5, which states the students must “demonstrate fluid reading at an understandable pace, adding visual displays and engaging audio recordings when appropriate to emphasize or enhance certain facts or details.” This seems difficult to get all 3rd graders on the same page of reading out loud because every student is on a different level of learning.
One resource in the CPALMS Educator Toolkit I would use in my classroom is Clues and Connections, which is a lesson where the teacher lists character traits with images to connect the characteristics with. Using technology, I would either put it on the SmartBoard and pick the students to draw a line between the image and key ideas or characteristics of the character in the story that they are currently reading. I would use this in my classroom because it is an interactive way to make sure that the students understand the key ideas of their readings. Also using the Smart Board keeps the students more engaged and you are using technology in the classroom.
When working on the Newsletter, I learned a lot of new ways to design with Word. Since I usually use different platforms like Google Docs or Pages, I had to figure out how to change the fonts, shadings, and how to insert images onto the page without ruining the format you had before. I learned that when adding a TextBox you can select different text boxes that match your theme. I really liked how my text boxes turned out because it made it more visually appealing. I really don’t like how the Spelling Test is turned sideways because it’s kind of hard to read for the audience, but besides that I really like how my Newsletter turned out. Next time when I make another newsletter for my own class I will try to create the two columns in an easier way because it took me 45 minutes to figure out how to make two columns without messing up all of the rest of the formating. Now that I know how to make a newsletter, it will be a fun and easy way to communicate with the parents of my students every month.
