I have to say I am a Google Docs lover, so I do not spend a lot of my time anymore using Microsoft Word. However when I was younger I learned how to use the software in one of my computer classes and I thought it was the coolest program to exist besides Webkinz. In my third grade class, I remember being excited to go to my computer class just because I would play typing games and learn how to add photos onto Microsoft Word. Now if I use Microsoft Word, I am quite confused because I changed my platform to Google Docs. I didn't know that Office 365 existed and I was reassured knowing that my files would be saved on my Google Drive. So I know that many of my teachers are more familiar with Microsoft Word because they use it to create syllabuses and different homework assignments.
In highschool, many of my teachers stressed to us the idea of plagiarism is never a good idea and we would be failures in life if we ever copied someone else’s information and made it our own. In an educational environment, it was and is still quite hard to find a reliable source and put the source in your own words without copying it word for word. But with lots of practice and help from my teachers, I learned how to write an essay with using materials that are credible. As a teacher, I would show the students examples of papers and teach them which ones are written correctly with no plagiarism and which ones they should not follow by example. Then I would give them a resource to use and summarize it using their own words to help them practice using information from other sources other than their minds.
Cyberbullying is super common in today’s society with all of the social media platforms that are introduced at such a young age. To help solve this issue of cyberbullying, I would show the movie Cyberbullying to the class because when I was in K-12 having a movie day seemed fun to me, so I would actually pay attention. The movie pretty much highlights what it is like for the other person on the other side of the screen, so the students can really see that their actions have effects on others even if it isn’t face to face. Illegally copyrighting may not be seen as an issue to students because they don’t see that they are actually breaking the law. I believe a good exercise to do in class to show the importance of not plagiarizing would be making the students read the actual laws in place and what would happen to them if they were caught plagiarizing someone else’s work. Privacy is very important online because many people may become stalkers of your account and put you in danger. Students are oblivious to online because nothing bad has ever happened to them, so they put all of their profiles online for the whole world to see. In my classroom I would show a few clips of people their age going through some type of stalker or dangerous situation because they were not careful with what they shared online. If students knew the aftermath of their doings, they would be a lot more careful with their online presence.
Believe it or not, I have never used google docs! Until one time for a class, my group project used it so we could all add to our project and edit each other's work. Google docs is definitely a great way to share work!
ReplyDeleteAlso, the movie cyberbullying was one of my faves back in high school, definitely a tear jerker, and would help your students learn the effects cyberbullying will have!
Yeah, I love the way you can work on a presentation the same time others are. Its really easy to navigate and the formatting for google docs just makes more sense to me! Cyberbullying got to me when I was younger, so I feel like it would definitely affect the younger generation too.
DeleteI think that having students read the actual laws surrounding plagiarism is a really good idea, because I know a lot of students feel as if "school rules" don't really matter, and are therefore more apt to cast them aside. If they were shown that it's a real world problem with real world solutions they may feel less inclined to be so blasé about it.
